![]() ![]() Even 23 year later, Robo Blast 3D is being updated, taking a lot of feedback and inspiration from other Sonic titles as it slowly builds and improves upon itself, barely recognizable as a DOOM engine game. Although it is in 3D style, the gameplay was meant to mimic the Sega Genesis games. It was made by modifying the Doom Legacy port of Doom. Sonic Robo Blast 3D entered development in 1998 and runs on the DOOM engine, and while it still adopts traditional level-by-level stage progression, the levels are far more open and exploratory than the stages in Sonic Adventure and even some modern 3D Sonic games. Sonic Robo Blast 2 was the first fan-made 3D Sonic game released in 1998 by Sonic Team Junior. ![]() One of the oldest fan games is a perfect example of this. These fan games also prove that Sonic can work in a 3D space. Mania was developed by various people from the Sonic fangame community, becoming a greater sales success than even the in-house developed Sonic Forces. From comedic meta-nods in Sonic Boom and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie to even having the characters converse with fans in livestream chats, the existence of Sonic Mania is Sega's biggest show of appreciation for fans. Recently, the company has actively tried to engage in a dialogue with fans, establishing and maintaining a strong relationship with them. Sega has done more than simply allow fan-made games to exist, though. ![]()
